The Death of Pop – Like Always
Released February 17, 2017
I am very pleased to present this brilliant, new single of my favourite psych-jangle (star-spangle?) understated, quartet from Bournemouth: The Death of Pop. (Angus James /Guitar and Vocals ; Oliver James /Guitar and Vocals; Richard Dent/ Bass; Thom James /Drums )
This new gem sounds very polished and multifaceted : “Like Always” starts of with an hallucinatory intro coming from beyond, then ascends into their trademark psychey guitar chord progressions that wax throughout with layers of shimmery jangle. The synth-strings (mellotron?) are silkier and smoother than ever, the sunshine pop harmonies are balmy, the basslines oscillate and swerve like a river and flow seamlessly with the other half of the rhythm section (Thom) who is progressively becoming one of the best drummers around: the complex uptempo time signatures expand in all directions without jeopardising its groove or sense of direction. Seriously, this shop is packed full of ear delicacies for music gourmets and when you think it’s all over it’s time for some psychoactive dessert. And hey, did I hear Jan Akkerman sneak in at the backdoor to have a nibble? Topclass from The Death of Pop! Like Always….
